A message from Outback Camel Company owner Andrew Harper

Since 1976 (long before I became involved with camels) the Outback Camel Company has been offering people the opportunity to explore our great deserts by joining 'commercial treks & expeditions.'

I purchased the business from pioneering outback legend Rex Ellis in 2000, and since then have explored all of this country’s great deserts – the Gibson, Great Victoria, Little Sandy, Great Sandy and Simpson. We have concentrated on walking in the larger more remote deserts, including parts of the Sturt Stony and Strzelecki Deserts.

On those many expeditions I could see that trekkers were looking for a more enriched educational experience as they walked alongside our camels and so in 2007 I founded Australian Desert Expeditions (ADE), a Registered Environmental Organisation that conducts scientific and ecological surveys across sections of these great landscapes.

By joining an ADE Survey, trekkers now had something extra to add to their desert experience, and could learn about the desert landscape and all it contains from leading desert ecologists.

This year we introduced the new all encompassing brand of Great Desert Walks, designed to get the message out to those thousands of keen bushwalkers and let them know that whether they take a camel trek with us or Walk With Purpose on an ADE survey, they can explore Australia's remote deserts with professional guides on journeys that are completely unique.

So if you are looking to expand your bushwalking horizons in 2024, you can join us on a Great Desert Walk.

And by the way - the camels will carry all your gear!
